Does Thiourea Dioxide Have an Odor Problem Like Hydrosulfite?

In solid form, Thiourea Dioxide is essentially odorless. Even after dissolving in water, its odor remains very faint — it is simply not in the same league as sodium hydrosulfite.

The odor of sodium hydrosulfite (Na₂S₂O₄) comes from its instability: it decomposes on contact with water or heat and releases SO₂ (a pungent sulfur smell). Thiourea Dioxide is far more stable than hydrosulfite and can be stored as a solid at room temperature for extended periods, so under normal conditions there is almost nothing to smell.

This is also one reason Thiourea Dioxide is easier to use than hydrosulfite in textile reduction clearing: the working environment is more operator-friendly, without the sulfur smell and rapid decomposition associated with handling hydrosulfite.

⚠️ Note: If Thiourea Dioxide becomes severely damp or is stored at high temperature for a long time, it may slowly decompose and release trace amounts of sulfur dioxide, at which point a slight odor may appear — but this is an abnormal condition and does not mean the product itself has an odor.
