What Is the Real Cost Advantage?
Direct Answer
Direct Answer Not in the unit price. It sits in three other places.
- Lower effective dose
According to our technical data sheet, stripping uses about one third of the sodium dithionite weight. The unit price is higher, but the cost per tonne of fabric can be clearly lower. Comparing price per kilogram alone reverses the conclusion.
- Lower indirect cost
| Area | Change |
|---|---|
| Warehousing | Tightly closed, cool and dry below 25 C; no airtight packaging needed |
| Transport | Not a water-reactive flammable-gas substance, so lower freight and insurance, and no restriction on loading in rain |
| Workshop | No sharp odour, lower extraction load, less equipment corrosion |
| Safety | Less hazardous-goods paperwork, emergency drills and administration |
These items rarely appear on the chemical purchase order but they do appear in the plant cost sheet.
- Lower quality cost
Better reproducibility means fewer reworks and corrections. The cost of one full batch rework usually exceeds the chemical saving of a whole year, a benefit many mills only notice after switching.
Where the advantage does not hold
- Deep-shade stripping that needs a hydrosulfite blend dilutes the benefit
- A large rise in alkali consumption can offset the saving on the reducing agent
- If the existing process already uses very little hydrosulfite, for example only light stripping, the gap is small
Bottom line
The advantage comes from effective dose, indirect cost and quality cost, not from unit price.
