Why must reduction clearing be followed by rinsing and neutralisation?

Reduction clearing must be followed by rinsing and neutralisation. This is not a formality: residual alkali and reducing agent keep acting on the fabric, which shows up as shade drift, poorer fixing and softening in later stages, and a finished-goods pH outside specification. Many apparel brands set an explicit limit on finished fabric pH.

1. Why neutralisation is necessary

  • Residual alkali: under alkaline conditions thiourea dioxide keeps releasing reducing power, so the shade keeps moving
  • Residual reducer: carried into a later dyebath it consumes dyes and auxiliaries, and the shade misses target
  • Fabric pH: most brands require finished fabric to sit in the weakly acid to neutral range; residual alkali breaches that
  • Hand: residual alkali leaves the fabric stiff and harsh

2. Recommended rinse and neutralise sequence

3. Three common problems

  • One quick rinse counted as washing: the bath was not drained properly, so neutraliser is wasted
  • Over-neutralising: pushing pH below 5 also affects some dyes and auxiliaries; use a pH meter rather than feel
  • Heating again after neutralising: no process benefit, and it adds energy cost and creasing risk

4. What to check

  • Fabric pH against the customer standard, commonly the weakly acid to neutral range
  • Rinse water pH and conductivity
  • Fastness and hand re-tested after fixing or softening
