Direct answer
Reductive stripping is not a universal way to reduce depth. It works well for light to medium depths and for correcting a shade drift, but on heavy shades - especially black, deep navy and dark brown - it usually only takes one or two steps out. Forcing it with more chemical damages the fibre first and colour yield falls sharply. Whether it can be done depends on the depth difference you need and the fibre type.

1. Correct the shade first: for a half-shade deviation, re-dyeing is often more economical than stripping
2. Combine reduction with mild oxidation: sometimes more effective than simply adding reducer

4. Re-dye darker instead: turning a light-shade rework lot into a dark shade is frequently cheaper than stripping it light
